Fitness Courses - Human Kinetics - Advanced Exercise Nutrition

In this interactive course, you will participate in activities that are designed to help you understand and apply the principles of advanced exercise nutrition. The course is supplemented by the text Advanced Exercise Nutrition by Marie Dunford. The text provides advanced nutrition information that will help you as you work through the course.

In the course you will assume the role of a newly hired fitness trainer at a company called Fitness, Inc., where you will be starting a five-day orientation to your job. During your orientation period, Jennifer Maxwell, Fitness, Inc.'s dietitian, will introduce you to concepts you'll need to be familiar with in order to do your job. You will work with five athletes. As the athletes share information about their training regimes and dietary habits, you will apply the principles introduced in the course to create individualized food and fluid intake plans. Your training concludes with a final exam of the key concepts and principles examined in the course.

Food and Fluid Intake Before Exercise

Jennifer Maxwell discusses food and fluid intake before exercise with you. The focus in this section of the course is on

learning to identify the goals of pre-exercise food and fluid intake;
applying the recommended dietary guidelines correctly, given the demands of the client's training and/or competition;
recognizing factors that may influence amount or composition of pre-exercise foods and beverages; and
planning pre-exercise food and fluid intake, given the demands of the client's training and/or competition.

The session concludes with a brief quiz over the key concepts and principles.

Food and Fluid Intake During Exercise

Now that you understand food and fluid intake before exercise, you will examine the food and fluid needs of the five athletes during exercise. By the end of this section of the course, you will be able to

identify the goals of food and fluid intake during training or competition;
apply the recommended dietary guidelines correctly, given the demands of the client's training and/or competition;
recognize factors that may influence the amount or composition of foods and beverages during exercise; and
plan food and fluid intake during exercise, given the demands of the client's training and/or competition.

Food and Fluid Intake After Exercise

In this session, each of the five athletes is discussing food and fluid intake after exercise. After working with the athletes, you will be able to

identify the goals of post-exercise food and fluid intake;
apply the recommended dietary guidelines correctly, given the demands of the client's training and/or competition;
recognize factors that influence glycogen resynthesis and rehydration; and
plan postexercise food and fluid intake.

A brief quiz concludes this session.

Carbohydrate Supercompensation

During this session you will determine which of the five athletes would benefit from carbohydrate supercompensation, given the demands of their competition. Various diet plans will be presented, and you will learn to choose which plan is appropriate under the circumstances (depletion/repletion stages and traditional/modified protocols).

After this session, you will be able to

identify the principles of carbohydrate supercompensation;
determine the athletes who will benefit from carbohydrate supercompensation;
distinguish between the traditional and modified protocols; and
choose a diet plan that meets the goals of the protocol.

Daily Diet Planning

In this session you will meet three new athletes. You will determine whether each athlete's current diet is likely to meet his or her nutritional goals. After this session, you'll be able to

estimate energy intake based on the demands of an athlete's training;
determine whether a diet is likely to meet an athlete's nutritional goals;
identify factors that are barriers to consuming a diet that enhances training and performance; and
recommend ways that the current diet could be changed so that the athlete can meet his or her nutritional goals.

The session concludes with a short quiz.

Finally, you'll take the online course test, which covers material from the interactive study guide and from the reading assignments.
